The Dynamic World of Urban Folklore
By the decision of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Folklore of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences the first volume of the monograph “Urban Folklore in the Changing Cultural Paradigm: Legends and Gossip” by Professor Fuzuli Bayat, Head of the Department of Folklore Theory, Doctor of Philology, has been published. In the book the multifaceted and dynamic nature of contemporary urban folklore in a theoretical context is investigated.
The mechanisms of formation of urban folklore, its differences and similarities from traditional folklore, the impact of the urbanization process, as well as the genre system are also studied. In particular, the phenomena of gossip, gossip and rumor for the first time from semiotic and narrative aspects as new textual forms of urban folklore are analyzed in the book.
The book consists of a preface, seven chapters, a summary in English and sources. The chapters are “Reasons and characteristics of the emergence of urban folklore”, “The concept of genre in the context of urban folklore”, “Modern myth as a source of urban folklore”, “Secret Knowledge: Transformation of Myths and Urban Folklore”, “Modern urban legends: structure and features”, “UFO Myths: A Cultural and Skeptical Approach” and “A new text type of urban folklore: gossip and rumor”.
In the study methodological approaches from the fields of folklore, social anthropology, sociology and cultural studies are combined and urban folklore in a multidisciplinary context is presented. The monograph is intended for folklorists, cultural historians, social science researchers and a wide audience of readers interested in this field.
It should be noted that the 304-page research work was published by the “Science and Education” publishing house.
