The concept of homeland and heroism was discussed in the epic “The Book of Dede Gorgud”

The scientific seminar was held at the Department “Dede Gorgud” of the Institute of Folklore of ANAS. Along with the staff of the Department “Dede Gorgud” the seminar was also attended by the head of department at Odlar Yurdu University, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Rustam Kamal, as well as employees of the Departments of Folklore and Written Literature and the Mythology of the Institute of Folklore.

At the scientific seminar the report titled “The Concepts of Homeland and Heroism in the Epic “The Book of Dede Gorgud’” was made by the leading researcher of the Department “Dede Gorgud” PhD, Associate Professor Khalida Mammadova.

In the report it was mentioned that according to the epic, the concept of homeland, initially perceived as a geographical space, also encompassed the notions of people, tribe, state, family and honor. It was noted that the concept of heroism was measured not only by physical strength, but also by moral maturity and loyalty to people and homeland.

In her presentation Khalida Mammadova noted that the epic “The Book of Dede Gorgud” was an important source of the statehood and patriotic thought of Turkic peoples, demonstrated that the ideas of homeland and heroism presented in the epic remain relevant today.

The presentation was followed by discussions on the topic. The head of the department, Professor Ramazan Gafarli, considered the report discussed at the seminar to be timely in terms of its general direction and described the author’s attempt to explore the concepts of homeland and heroism within the context of the epic “The Book of Dede Gorgud” as a successful step.

Then Professor Rustam Kamal, Associate Professor Leyla Mammadova, Associate Professor Matanat Yaqubgizi, Associate Professor Khuraman Karimova, Associate Professor Aynura Safarova, Naila Mirzayeva and Gulkhara Ahmadova also shared various academic opinions and conclusions regarding Khalida Mammadova’s research presented at the seminar and wished the researcher success in her future studies.
