The scientific seminar dedicated to the cognitive-semantic analysis of paremiological units was held at the Institute of Folklore
The Institute of Folklore of ANAS organized the scientific seminar in a hybrid format. The event was attended by department heads of the Institute, scientists and specialists, as well as doctoral and dissertation students. At the event, Chichek Efendiyeva, a leading researcher at the Department of Folklore Theory, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, Associate Professor, delivered a report on the theme “Cognitive-semantic analysis of Azerbaijani paremiological units”.
Opening the seminar, the director of the Institute, Doctor of Sciences in Philology Hikmat Guliyev, mentioned in his speech that the main goal of the event was to discuss the possibilities of applying cognitive approaches, which were expanding in modern humanities, to folklore materials.
He noted that proverbs and sayings should be studied not only as linguistic units, but also as a complex semantic system reflecting the structure of collective thought. According to the director’s thoughts, research in this direction creates new analytical frameworks for folklore, as well as linguistics and semiotics.
Then, Associate Professor Chichek Efendiyeva, who delivered a report, touched upon the essence of the cognitive approach and said that in modern research, linguistic phenomena were studied inseparably with human cognitive activity.
Analyses based on the specific examples have shown that the repeated use of paremiological units in various texts turns them into supporting elements. This is especially evident in epic texts and examples of folk prose.
A wide scientific discussion was held around the report and various approaches were told by Professor Fuzuli Bayat, Professor Afzaladdin Asgar, Doctor of Sciences in Philology Agaverdi Khalilov, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, Associate Professor Elchin Galiboglu, Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs of the Institute of Folklore, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, Associate Professor Afag Ramazanova.
In conclusion, Hikmat Guliyev summarized the discussions and said that the ideas expressed once again showed that the cognitive-semantic analysis of paremiological units requires a multidisciplinary scientific approach. The director noted that research in this area strengthens the integration among folklore, linguistics and cognitive sciences and creates new methodological opportunities. According to his thoughts, the presented report can serve as a theoretical and practical basis for future research in this area.
