Nowruz is one of the most important holidays celebrated in Azerbaijan and many Turkic-speaking countries, distinguished by its rich traditions. During this holiday, the customs, rituals and beliefs of our people are clearly manifested.

These notes were made by Tajir Gurbanov Samimi, Head of the Ashiq Creativity Department of the Institute of Folklore of ANAS, PhD in Philology and Associate Professor, in a statement to AZERTAC.

The expert noted that on the eve of Nowruz, homes were cleaned and tidied, and rituals such as throwing flour onto the ceiling were performed, which were considered symbols of abundance and purity. Water brought from a spring at night was regarded as sacred and was used to cleanse both people and animals.

The scholar added that social solidarity and sharing also play an important role during Nowruz. Wealthier individuals help the poor, the sick are visited and efforts are made to ensure that everyone celebrates the holiday with joy. According to him, during the days of Nowruz, tables are richly set with fruits and sweets, the people visit one another to share the festive spirit.

“Nowruz lives in the memory of our people as a holiday of joy, hope and renewal. Its main essence lies in being together, supporting one another, and joyfully welcoming the arrival of spring,” the head of the department at the Institute of Folklore of ANAS mentioned.
