International Mother Language Day was celebrated
The event was held under the theme “Our language is our national identity!”, dedicated to February 21 - International Mother Language Day, jointly organized by the Institute of Folklore of ANAS and Technical-Humanitarian Lyceum Number 2 named after Habib bey Mahmudbeyov of Sabail district of Baku city. First, the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan was played and a minute of silence was observed in memory of our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and sovereignty of our homeland.
Opening the event with an introductory speech, Elvin Aslanli, director of Technical-Humanitarian Lyceum Number 2, said that International Mother Language Day was established at the 30th session of the UNESCO General Conference held in November 1999 and since 2000, this day has been celebrated to preserve linguistic and cultural diversity around the world. He mentioned that every nation transmited its history, national and spiritual values and traditions to future generations through its native language. The native language played an important role in the formation of a person’s way of thinking, worldview and national identity.
Then the reports such as “Language is a factor determining national character” by head of the department of the Institute of Folklore of ANAS, Doctor of Sciences in Philology, Associate Professor Leyla Mammadova, “Our mother tongue is our national asset and a source of pride” by PhD, Associate Professor Aynur Ibrahimova, “Native language as a semantic carrier of folklore memory” by PhD, Associate Professor Gulnar Osmanova, “The language of fairy tales: allegory” by PhD, Associate Professor Sevinj Aliyeva, “The relic of the ages is my native language” by PhD, Associate Professor Gulsumkhanim Hasilova and others were made.
The event concluded with an artistic part. Students of the 6th and 7th grades of the Azerbaijani and Russian sections of the lyceum performed poems by famous poets dedicated to the Mother Language and scenes from various works were shown.
