ANAS Institute of Folklore and BSU Faculty of Philology held the joint scientific session
The scientific session on the topic “Preserving the purity of the mother language: national identity and language in the era of globalization” was held, jointly organized by the Institute of Folklore of ANAS and the Faculty of Philology of Baku State University, dedicated to February 21 - International Mother Language Day. The event took place at the Faculty of Philology of the university and was attended by representatives of the scientific community, scientists and students.
The session began with the screening of the video clip titled “Our Mother Language is Our National Presence” produced by the Folklore Studio. Delivering the opening speech, the dean of the faculty, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, Associate Professor Elchin Mammadov greeted the participants and spoke about the importance of February 21 - International Mother Language Day. He noted that the mother language is the bearer of the national-spiritual existence, historical memory and cultural identity of every people. Language is not only a means of communication, but also a key factor shaping the worldview, way of thinking and value system of the people.
Director of the Institute of Folklore of ANAS, Doctor of Sciences in Philology Hikmat Guliyev, speaking, noted that both at the 80th anniversary event of ANAS on November 3 last year and in an interview with local TV channels on January 5, 2026, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, paid special attention to the issue of preserving the purity of the language. The President mentioned that in modern times, the Azerbaijani language was the language of 50 million Azerbaijanis living not only within the borders of Azerbaijan, but also around the world and that this language had survived thousands of years and reached the modern era. The director noted that each language was an open system that had undergone a specific development path and had internal regularities and the processes of globalization and digitalization created new manifestations in this system.
Within the framework of the scientific session the different reports such as “Azerbaijani literary language norms and speech culture” by Professor Tofig Hajiyev, “Literary language and academic writing in the context of globalization” by Doctor of Sciences in Philology Agaverdi Khalil, “Problems with terms and personal names that have passed into our language from Arabic, Persian and Russian” by PhD, associate professor Fikrat Shiriyev, “The impact of social networks on the Azerbaijani literary language: ways to preserve the purity of the language” by PhD, associate professorAposh Valiyev, “Folklore as a potential source of Azerbaijani literary language” by Zafar Farhadov were made.
At the end of the event the participants noted the importance of strengthening educational activities aimed at preserving the mother language, especially in forming a speech culture among the younger generation and mentioned the need to continue scientific and practical cooperation in this area.
