Preservation of the native language in the age of globalization: folklore and the context of youth
Globalization, especially the rapid development of information technologies and the increase in intercultural interactions, has a special impact on national languages and cultures. This process has caused serious concerns about the preservation of the purity and originality of the language. Therefore, preserving the purity of the Azerbaijani language is an important issue that serves to preserve national identity and culture.
The views expressed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in his programmatic speech on the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, as well as in his interview with local television channels on January 5, 2026, regarding preserving the purity of the language and keeping it away from foreign influences, indicate that this issue is one of the main priorities of state policy. In this context, folklore is of particular importance in terms of preserving the purity of the national language and keeping the cultural memory of the people alive.
Language is a fundamental cultural phenomenon that reflects the people’s historical memory, worldview, national and spiritual values. The presentation of the Azerbaijani language in the President’s speeches as one of the important symbols of national existence and state independence once again confirms this reality. The issue of preserving the purity of the language should be assessed not only within the normative-linguistic framework, but also at the cultural and ideological level.
Azerbaijani folklore has been formed over the centuries as a product of the collective thinking of the people and has preserved the internal development laws of the language. Fairy tales, epics, quatrains, proverbs and other folklore examples reflect the lexical richness, semantic capacity and expressive possibilities of the language with all its natural nuances. The simplicity, imagery and functional precision observed in these texts can be considered one of the main indicators of the purity of the Azerbaijani language. The President’s calls to protect the language from unnecessary borrowed words further actualize these features of folklore.
The truth is that language lives not only with laws and terminological control, but also with memory. However, folklore is the core of this memory. As long as folklore lives, the language remains pure and as long as the language remains pure, the people do not forget themselves, their identity.
